At Art on the Square Gallery, we are delighted to celebrate Victoria Kelly as our August Artist of the Month. Through her vibrant oil landscapes and deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the Lowcountry, Victoria creates artwork that invites viewers to slow down, breathe deeply, and experience the serenity of the world around them.

Originally from New York, Victoria spent her early adult years in Virginia Beach and Charlotte, North Carolina before settling in Summerville in 1990. Today, the Lowcountry's marshes, waterways, and coastal landscapes are at the heart of her artistic vision.

"One of the moments that inspired me to become an artist was sitting on the porch of our vacation home on Edisto Island, overlooking the vast marsh," Victoria recalls. That experience sparked a creative journey that eventually led her to fine art painting six years ago after many years of painting decorative wine glasses.

Her work is best described as slightly impressionistic landscapes filled with color and atmosphere. Working primarily in oils, Victoria captures the ever-changing moods of nature, especially the marshlands she loves so dearly.

A Lifelong Learner

Though self-taught, Victoria has embraced every opportunity to grow as an artist. She began painting in watercolor under the guidance of Charlynn Knight before transitioning to oils. Along the way, she has studied with accomplished artists including Mary Hoffman, Betsy McDonald, Michelle Held, and Kyle Stuckey.

Joining the Summerville Artist Guild became another important step in her development. "I've gained so much knowledge and great friendships," she says, emphasizing the value of community and continued learning.

The Creative Process

Victoria often begins in her studio by reviewing her collection of photographs, searching for an image that resonates with her in that moment. She carefully considers composition and value structure before putting brush to canvas.

Then, as she describes it, she simply gets into "the zone."

Music often accompanies her painting sessions, helping create an environment where creativity can flourish. She works thoughtfully, frequently stepping away from a painting when it is about seventy percent complete. Viewing the piece over several days allows her to return with fresh eyes.

"If I don't feel the constant need to fix it," she says, "I know it's done."

Capturing Peace, Joy, and Wonder

Whether depicting a glowing sunset over the marsh or a quiet natural landscape, Victoria hopes her paintings evoke feelings of peace, joy, and excitement. Her love for nature—and especially her love for the Lowcountry—shines through every brushstroke.

Serene. Atmospheric. Colorful.

When asked to describe her art in three words, her answer perfectly captures both her work and her spirit: serene, atmospheric, and colorful.  Among all her favorite subjects, one stands above the rest:

"The marsh, especially at sunset."

It's easy to understand why. The Lowcountry's vast skies, reflective waterways, and ever-changing light provide endless opportunities for artistic expression.

Advice for Emerging Artists

For those just beginning their artistic journey, Victoria's advice is straightforward:
"Take classes and workshops, practice, and join an art guild."
Her own path demonstrates the power of curiosity, persistence, and community in developing artistic skills and finding one's unique voice.

Bringing the Lowcountry Home

Victoria hopes her work allows collectors to experience the same sense of peace and wonder that inspires her every day.

One of her favorite collector stories involves a painting of Azalea Park that was purchased as a Christmas gift for a young woman she had known since childhood. Seeing the recipient's joy upon receiving the painting remains one of Victoria's most treasured memories.
