Art on the Square Gallery is an artist-owned gallery in the historic area of Summerville, South Carolina representing emerging and established local artists. We're a family friendly, collaborative gallery offering originals and reproductions, framing, workshops, art demonstrations and events for the discerning collector.

our Story

Art Central Gallery opened its doors in downtown Summerville in 1998. The thirteen artists in
the cooperative gallery worked hard to create art and become part of the community. The gallery made many friends and developed devoted customers during their 21 years of business. Then, as sometimes happens, a new opportunity caught the artists’ attention. 

The Nexton Community opened on the north side of town. It quickly became a desirable place
to live and work. The artists at Art Central began to take notice, and soon an itch became a full-
fledged passion to pull up stakes and head to Nexton.

So, with a slight tremble in their voices, the intrepid artists said good-bye to their home on Short Central Avenue. They said so long for now to the wonderful people who had become loyal customers and friends over the years. They promised to keep in touch. And these artists promised to open Art on the Square Gallery.
 

This is where we find our little group of artists now-working hard to make this dream come true. They are busy creating new work, planning a bright, contemporary setting to display their art, inviting associates to join them in their new space.

The Next Chapter

The next chapter opens with Art on the Square Gallery growing to almost 40 artists! For over five years, our home in Nexton was profitable, engaging and a dynamic part of the Nexton Square family. It was a time of great challenge, with the pandemic and life changes, and great opportunity, with our growing customer base as well as our roster of talented artists.

But the original artist/owners in our group began to long for home. We wanted to move back to the historic district of Summerville where we began so many years ago.
A new opportunity presented itself at 138 S. Main Street in downtown Summerville. The historic
building needed a little TLC, and while we worked through those details, the artists put their heads together and created the next iteration of Art on the Square Gallery.
 

Our new gallery is on Hutchinson Square, home to many fine shops, restaurants and community events and within walking distance of the best that the historic district has to offer.
 

Art on the Square Gallery has come home to our roots. And we are grateful to be here! We can’t wait to re-introduce ourselves to long-time friends and to meet our new neighbors. All of our artists are busy creating new work, planning exhibits and workshops, and updating our website—all in anticipation of our opening date.
