our Story
Art on the Square Gallery has been part of the Summerville art community for more than two decades, shaped by a shared belief that art is meant to be lived with, celebrated, and shared.
Originally founded in 1998 as Art Central Gallery, the cooperative began with thirteen working artists who were committed not only to creating meaningful work, but to building genuine connections within their community. Over the years, the gallery became a beloved destination in downtown Summerville, known for its welcoming spirit, devoted collectors, and strong sense of place.
As Summerville grew, so did the gallery. In 2019, the artists embraced a new opportunity and relocated to Nexton Square, reimagining the gallery as Art on the Square Gallery. For five years, the gallery flourished as part of the Nexton community, expanding its roster to nearly 30 artists and navigating a season marked by both challenge and growth. During that time, the gallery deepened its commitment to excellence, creativity, and collaboration, even as the world around it shifted.
Yet the pull of home remained strong.
The Next Chapter
In 2025, Art on the Square returned to downtown Summerville, opening its doors in a beautifully restored historic building at 138 South Main Street, overlooking Hutchinson Square.
The move marked both a homecoming and a renewal. Thoughtfully designed to be open, light-filled, and inviting, the gallery offers a space where art can be experienced at an unhurried pace and where each artist’s work is given room to speak.
Today, Art on the Square Gallery represents 29 artists working across a wide range of styles and mediums, including painting, sculpture, fiber art, mixed media, and fine craft. While the work is diverse, it is united by a shared standard of craftsmanship, originality, and intention. Each piece is carefully curated to complement the others, creating a cohesive and inspiring environment for collectors and visitors alike.
Beyond exhibitions, the gallery remains deeply connected to its community. Artist-led classes, workshops, and special events invite guests to engage more fully with the creative process, whether they are seasoned artists, first-time collectors, or simply curious explorers. Art on the Square continues to serve as a gathering place where creativity, conversation, and connection naturally unfold.
Returning to historic Summerville has reaffirmed the gallery’s roots while opening the door to a vibrant new chapter. Art on the Square Gallery is honored to welcome long-time friends, new neighbors, and visitors from near and far to experience the stories, talent, and beauty found within its walls.
