This April, we at Art on the Square Gallery are honored to share the beautiful art pieces created by Belle Anderson.  At the heart of Belle’s work is a desire to evoke feeling—particularly a sense of serenity.
Each painting is less about replicating a scene and more about capturing a mood: the calm before a coastal storm, the golden hush of sunset over marshland, or the quiet mystery of a shadowed swamp.

A Style that Celebrates the Lowcountry

There is something unmistakably soulful about the Lowcountry—the way the marsh grasses sway under a painted sky, the quiet stillness of tidal creeks, and the hush of ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss. For artist Belle Anderson, this landscape is more than scenery—it is a wellspring of inspiration, healing, and creative discovery.

Reinventing the Creative Spirit

Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, Belle’s life has been one of movement and reinvention. Having lived in fifteen different states and worn many hats—including entrepreneur and business owner—her creative spirit has always found expression in one form or another. From jewelry-making to doll crafting, art has been a constant thread. Yet, it wasn’t until she settled in the Lowcountry some twenty years ago that painting truly called to her.

It's Never Too Late

What makes Belle’s story especially remarkable is that she began painting at the age of 65. With no formal art education, her work is guided not by rigid technique but by instinct, emotion, and a deep connection to her surroundings. Her journey is a testament to the idea that creativity has no expiration date—it simply waits for the right moment to bloom.

Artistic Mediums

Belle works across a rich variety of mediums, including oil, acrylic, alcohol ink, resin, and mixed media. While she is best known for her evocative oil landscapes, she embraces experimentation, allowing each medium to guide her expression in different ways. Her resin pieces shimmer with depth and movement, while her alcohol ink works capture fleeting, organic forms that feel both spontaneous and intentional.

Capturing the Mood

Belle draws continual inspiration from the three defining ecosystems of the Lowcountry—the ocean, the marsh, and the swamp—each offering its own palette, rhythm, and emotional tone. These environments are not only subjects in her work; they are collaborators in her creative process.

Beyond aesthetics, art serves as something deeply personal for Belle. It is both a passion and a form of therapy—a way to process, reflect, and find peace. That authenticity resonates in her work, earning her numerous blue ribbons and the admiration of collectors who feel the calm her paintings so effortlessly convey.
