This April, we are delighted to celebrate Debbie Grogen as our Artist of the Month at Art on the Square Gallery.  A lifelong Lowcountry native, Debbie brings a vibrant, intuitive approach to her work—infusing each piece with color, movement, and a deep sense of joy.

A Lowcountry Original

Born at the Charleston Naval Hospital, Debbie has spent her life rooted in the beauty of the Lowcountry. Her connection to this region is unmistakable in her work, where coastal scenes, marsh landscapes, and Charleston landmarks emerge through expressive color and impressionistic flair.

A Style That Celebrates Color and Freedom

Debbie describes her artistic style as Impressionism with a focus on color and abstract qualities. Working primarily in watercolor and alcohol ink (though she also enjoys acrylics, pastels, and oils), Debbie embraces a fluid, intuitive process—one that has evolved far beyond the “stay inside the lines” instruction of her childhood.

Her paintings are not just representations; they are interpretations—alive with bold and unique color combinations and a sense of emotional spontaneity.

From Nursing to Full-Time Artist

After a 34-year career in nursing, Debbie returned fully to her artistic roots in 2007. Though her creative journey began at just six years old, it was her later studies with renowned artists such as Janet Rogers, Tony Van Hasselt, Don Andrews, and James Pratt, along with Belle Anderson—a well-known artist at Art on the Square Gallery--who helped refine her voice.

Today, Debbie is proudly represented by both Charleston Artist Guild Gallery and Art on the Square, continuing to grow and share her work with the community she loves.

The Creative Process: Structure Meets Intuition

Debbie’s process begins with observation—photographing scenes that spark joy or curiosity. She uses these references to establish composition, but then sets them aside, allowing intuition to guide the painting forward.

Stepping back frequently—sometimes even viewing her work in a mirror—she fine-tunes balance and harmony, relying on her strength in color to bring each piece to life.

Art That Evokes Joy

At the heart of Debbie’s work is a simple but powerful goal: to make people feel something uplifting.

Whether it’s a sense of familiarity, tranquility, or pure happiness, she hopes each painting connects with viewers in a way that brings a smile. For Debbie, a piece truly feels complete when it finds its home with a collector—when that emotional connection is made.

Rooted in Gratitude

Faith plays an important role in Debbie’s life and art. She approaches each painting with gratitude, viewing her creative ability as a blessing. That sense of appreciation quietly permeates her work, adding depth and sincerity to every piece.

A Vital Part of the Summerville Arts Community

Being part of the gallery means “the world” to Debbie. She treasures the collaboration and camaraderie among fellow artists and celebrates the way Summerville, South Carolina continues to grow as a vibrant arts destination.

Looking Ahead

In addition to her studio work, Debbie shares her passion through teaching, offering alcohol ink classes throughout the year at Art on the Square Gallery and at Seabrook Island.  She believes that any person with an interest in art—whether they are beginners or emerging artists—should do what they love and never give up, for there is creativity in all of us.

Visit us this April at Art on the Square Gallery to experience Debbie’s joyful, color-rich work in person—and perhaps find a piece that speaks directly to you.
