SPONTANEOUS, CALMING & PURE

Some photographs invite you to pause.

To slow down. To breathe. To notice something simple and beautiful that might otherwise pass you by.

That is the spirit behind the work of photographer Barbara Chilton.

Originally from Burlington, New Jersey, Barbara proudly calls herself a Jersey Girl. After graduating from high school, she joined the Air Force and spent twenty years serving her country before eventually settling in Charleston. Today, the Lowcountry’s landscapes and quiet moments of natural beauty have become a meaningful part of her creative life.

Though Barbara has always felt drawn to the creative arts, her photography journey began in an unexpected place. During a six-month deployment in Qatar, she picked up a camera and discovered a new way of seeing the world. What began as curiosity quickly became a lasting passion.

An Eye for Quiet Beauty

Barbara describes her artistic style simply as nature-centered works that convey intimacy, thoughtfulness, and quiet emotion.

Photography remains her primary medium, though she has recently begun expanding her creative practice to include sketching and watercolor. Her goal is to continue growing as an artist and eventually display multiple mediums within the gallery.

While she does not have formal academic training in the arts, creativity has always been present in her life. Her father was a naturally gifted sketch artist, and some of her earliest memories include drawing exercises together where he helped her develop control and observation.

Over the years, Barbara has taken photography classes, but some of her most meaningful artistic development came through mentorship. Working alongside local professional photographer Mahmood Fazal and the Charleston Center for Photography helped refine her technical skills and deepen her understanding of composition and light. Among her many influences, the legendary landscape photographer Ansel Adams remains a favorite.

Inspiration from Within

Barbara’s inspiration often begins internally.

She describes it as something more spiritual than tangible. While travel and long walks with her therapy dog, Charleigh, frequently spark ideas, the deeper motivation comes from within. It is a quiet sense of connection to the world around her.

When creating, she almost always listens to classical music. The calm rhythm helps her stay focused and present without distraction.

Her creative approach mirrors the feeling of her work itself: unhurried, reflective, and grounded in observation.

Patience in the Creative Process

Like many artists, Barbara occasionally encounters moments when inspiration feels distant. When that happens, she has learned not to force the process.

Instead, she pauses and returns when the moment feels right.

Rest and patience, she believes, often open the door for creativity to return naturally.

After retiring from a forty-year career, Barbara has been able to devote more of her time to the creative arts. In addition to photography, she has been diligently practicing drawing and painting as she continues expanding her artistic range.

Outside the studio, she happily wears another important role: Nana to her local grandchildren.

Art and Community

Being part of Art on the Square Gallery is both rewarding and humbling for Barbara. She appreciates the opportunity to show her work alongside such a talented group of artists.

What she loves most about the gallery experience, however, is the people.

Throughout her career she traveled extensively and discovered that every individual has a unique story.

That same curiosity carries into her time at the gallery, where she enjoys meeting visitors, hearing about their lives, and connecting through conversations about art.

For Collectors

Barbara describes her work in three words: spontaneous, calming, and pure.

Her photographs naturally complement peaceful, reflective spaces within a home. Bedrooms, offices, reading nooks, and quiet hallways are perfect settings where viewers can pause and take in the subtle beauty of the natural world.

For collectors drawn to serenity, thoughtful composition, and nature-inspired imagery, Barbara’s photography offers a gentle invitation to slow down and look a little closer.

Her work is available to view at Art on the Square Gallery in downtown Summerville, where visitors can experience the calm, contemplative spirit of her photography in person.
