PLAYFUL REALISM SHAPED ONE CAREFUL FIBER AT A TIME

Step into Art on the Square Gallery and you may find yourself smiling before you even realize why.

Perched delicately on a pedestal. Mid-leap. Head tilted just so. A tiny creature so lifelike you almost expect it to blink.

That is the magic of Sarah Mitchell.

Originally from the coast of Massachusetts, Sarah grew up near the ocean before heading south to attend Emory University. After graduate school and work as an archaeologist, she and her husband made Summerville home nearly fifteen years ago. Today, her artistic style leans toward Naturalism, sometimes Surrealist Naturalism depending on her mood. She enjoys creating realistic sculptures but occasionally gives them a playful twist.

Sarah works primarily with wire and wool through a process called needle felting. Entirely self-taught, she discovered the medium just a few years ago and immediately knew she had found her artistic voice. What began as curiosity quickly became devotion.

For collectors, this is what makes Sarah’s work so compelling. It is rare. It is unexpected. And it is deeply intentional.

Sculpting Life from Wool

Sarah’s process begins with observation. When she decides to create an animal, she studies hundreds of photos to understand proportions, posture, and personality. She builds a wire armature first, then carefully needle felts wool around the structure, sculpting form one precise movement at a time.

She pays particular attention to movement and expression. Her goal is to create animals that look as though they could walk or fly off their stands at any moment.

And they truly do.

Some pieces lean toward realism. Others embrace whimsy. A tiny mouse band. A bird mid-song. A woodland creature caught in a playful pause.

What she loves most is the reaction.

There is something deeply satisfying about watching someone’s face light up when they encounter one of her sculptures. Whether drawn to the lifelike detail or the playful charm, viewers rarely leave without smiling.

A Deep Love for Animals

Sarah has loved animals since childhood. At one point, she dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. Today, she continues to observe the movement and mannerisms of animals closely, even fostering kittens when she can.

That affection shows in every sculpture.

Her animals are not stiff studies. They have posture. Curiosity. Personality. They feel alive.

Sarah’s work offers more than décor. It offers conversation. A spark of joy on a bookshelf, entry table, study desk, or child’s room.

These sculptures do not shout for attention. They quietly charm.

Rooted in Summerville

Summerville has been Sarah’s home for nearly fifteen years, and being part of Art on the Square Gallery is deeply meaningful to her. She loves the sense of community, the collaboration among artists, and the way the town has grown into a destination for art lovers.

When she is not sculpting, she teaches needle felting workshops for all ages and skill levels. The medium is surprisingly beginner-friendly and wonderfully tactile, making it accessible to anyone curious enough to try.

Her encouragement to new artists is simple: jump in. Try everything. You never know which medium will click.

For Collectors

Sarah’s work ranges from small, giftable pieces perfect for children or the young at heart to larger, highly detailed sculptures suited for serious collectors. She offers accessible price points as well as more intricate, heirloom-quality works.

She imagines her art melding naturally into people’s homes, sparking joy every time it is passed in the hallway or noticed on a shelf.

And that is exactly what it does.

For the collector who appreciates craftsmanship, imagination, and a touch of whimsy, Sarah’s needle-felted animals offer something rare: art that feels alive.

Fun. Unique. Whimsical.
