When color, movement, and faith become a song on canvas
At Art on the Square Gallery, we’re honored to feature the work of Summerville native Peg Timm, whose paintings invite viewers into a quiet yet powerful conversation between color, movement, and spirit. Her style—lyrical abstract expressionism—is as poetic as it sounds: a dance of flowing marks, rich texture, and emotion, each piece echoing like music on canvas.
“Lyrical abstraction,” Peg explains, “is a style of painting that uses flowing colors and mark making to express emotion—like poetry or music on canvas.”
Though she’s only been painting for five years, Peg’s creative roots stretch back generations. Her grandmother, a prolific artist, filled her childhood with encouragement to explore and create. Peg’s own journey into visual art began alongside her daughter—painting together reignited something deep within her. That spark led her to formal training at the Milan Art Institute, where she honed her craft in classical drawing, oil painting, and mixed media before discovering her artistic voice through abstraction.
“I fell in love with the power of art to express the depths of my heart and experiences,” she says. “Each piece feels like coming home.”
A Symphony of Color and Spirit
Peg’s work draws inspiration from nature, faith, and family, often blurring the lines between visual art, music, and poetry.
“Music becomes visual poetry. Dance becomes rhythmic expression on canvas. Color and texture become songs of truth, beauty, and freedom.”
Her process is intuitive—a conversation between heart and hand. She often begins with a collage of ideas and photographs, but once the brush hits the canvas, she lets go of control and lets the work unfold organically.
“Much like life,” she reflects, “I don’t fully know where I’m heading, but as I lean into Love, I can trust the process.”
Music fills her studio as she paints, creating a rhythm of worship and wonder. Each session ends with a ritual of renewal—tidying her space so it’s ready for fresh inspiration.
“Creativity and mess always go together,” she laughs. “But cleaning resets my mind for what’s next.”
Art as Encounter
For Peg, art and faith are inseparable.
“Painting to me is a sacred encounter with the depths of unconditional love,” she shares. “My studio is one of my favorite places to experience heaven on earth.”
Her canvases celebrate transformation—freedom found in surrender, peace born from presence, joy rising through color. Her work is more than visual—it’s experiential.
Viewers often describe standing before one of her pieces as if they’re standing in a prayer—bathed in color, light, and serenity.
Rooted in Home, Reaching Toward Heaven
As a homeschooling mother of three, Peg balances creative life and family with grace and rhythm.
“I see all of life as art,” she says. “Our mornings are full of lessons and home life, and afternoons are for creativity and connection.”
Having grown up in Summerville, exhibiting her work at Art on the Square Gallery feels like a homecoming.
“Hutchinson Square has always been the heart of our town,” she says. “It’s a blessing to bring art to a place I love so dearly.”
Her collectors often describe her work as peaceful, uplifting, and deeply personal—the kind of art that transforms a space into a sanctuary.
“My hope is that my art fills homes with depth, joy, and hope,” she says. “That it inspires others to live intentionally in love.”
Peg’s paintings range from mini abstracts starting at $35 to large statement pieces up to $1,500, available in the gallery along with small originals and giftable works.
And perhaps her favorite collector story comes not from a client, but from her son:
“He once looked at a finished piece and said, ‘Mommy, please don’t sell that one. I love it.’ That meant everything to me.”
You can experience Peg’s poetic, inspiring, and authentic art in person at Art on the Square Gallery, where each brushstroke invites you to pause, breathe, and remember the beauty of simply being present.
