ART on the Square Gallery

associate artist

Lu Bentley

Lu’s first medium as a young girl was paper and pencil, since they were readily available. The gift of an oil set sent her on the adventure of color. From there, she worked with pastels and then to watercolors. Acrylics have been her preferred means of expression for the past several years.

Although formal art study was not in the cards for her, she has experienced many painting workshops with well known artists whose work she admires. Having won well over fifty painting awards throughout her career, from honorable mentions to best in show, this path has been to her benefit.

Lu has participated in Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit for over fifteen years, has also shown her work in festivals from Myrtle Beach to Beaufort, SC, and is currently represented at Studio 151 Fine Art Gallery, 175 Church Street, Charleston, SC, 29401.

Lu says, “I consider myself a contemporary, modern artist because of my preference of strong shapes and shadows as well as vibrant colors. This lends a slightly abstract or surrealistic quality to my work. I love the bright, clear, southern sunshine that creates the shadows which are used in my paintings. It is compelling to paint these shadows in so many ways, with different colors, shapes and sizes. Thoughtful composition and strong design components permit the successful contrast of realistic against abstract elements. It is my habit to use a warm palette with cool accents.”
